Day by Day Itinerary
As the name suggests, this tour highlights the contrasting cultures which have greatly influenced the cities that rose and fell along these ancient trade routes. Journey to Kashgar in the far north-west, the centre of Yygur culture and, 1,000 years ago, the fabled city at the junction of the northern and southern Silk routes. Witness remnants of the important religions that shaped history – Buddhist grottoes, ruined cities, Islamic mosques and far outposts of China’s Great Wall – stand among the dramatic scenery of mountains and stark deserts. All around, discover bustling markets and colourful lifestyles of the people who continue to contribute to the legend of the Silk Road.

At various times in history and for a total period of some 1100 years, Xian has been the capital of the Chinese empire. It has served longer than any other city as the ancient capital and in the past vied with Rome, and later Constantinople, as the world’s greatest city. It was the starting point for the great trade caravans of the Silk Road and has a wealth of historical sites, the most famous being the excavations of the life-sized Terracotta Army and the bronze horses and chariots found near the tomb of the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.
